Writing a press release is often considered old-fashioned, because there are now many new ways to approach the press. Yet I still write press releases regularly, because with 1 press release you can write to multiple channels.
1. Put yourself in the journalist’s shoes
To obtain free publicity it is important that not only you but also the medium benefits from your news being shared. This makes it easy for the journalist to determine whether your news connects with the medium.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- So is it interesting enough?
- Does it appeal to the right target group?
- Is the content important enough?
2. Be informative
As I explained earlier, PR is not marketing. It is not your press release that you sell something, but that you purely provide information. So write as objectively as possible and not too recruiting.
3. Structure
A press release has its own structure, at the time you choose a traditional press release keep you to this structure.
Thus, a press release is fully ‘roll out’, each paragraph you have to tell a bit more about the subject.
4. The first paragraph
Sometimes it happens that the media only copy the first paragraph from a press release, therefore it is important that the first paragraph contains the most important information. In it you write;
- Who
- What
- Where
- When
- Why
- And how?
5. Third person
In order to deliver your news in a ready-to-use manner, it is wise to write the press release in the third person.
In this active form you avoid words like ‘will’, ‘be’ and ‘can’.
With these 5 tips, your press release is guaranteed to be picked up!
Success guaranteed!
The beauty of a press release is that you can approach multiple media with the same message, so perfect!
But to ensure that you are seen everywhere often requires a little more creativity, so you can write your own pitches for interviews or respond to Facebook messages for publications in national magazines.
