It is easy to get published when you’re new. When you’re new, you’re news. And news gets published!

One way to start is for you to submit yourself to various websites. A nice start: submit as a starting entrepreneur (in other words, send a press release containing the news of your start-up) for the Chamber of Commerce’s Hallo! magazine. This is the magazine of the Chamber of Commerce, where the most extraordinary corporate news is published.

Of course you can also go there with your special story or business office. You can also give a lot of advice (unsolicited or not) and see how the competition is doing.

My Advice - Make sure you have something unique to say through a special and ambitious mission!

People always like to watch and follow people with ambition.  Nothing is more appealing than someone who likes to do something with his life. Many people prefer to follow your interesting and appealing life than to look at their own.
Put down an ambitious or special mission. Nice examples are all around. A special mission is that of Businesswoman of the Year 1997 Yolanda Eijgenstein.

Here’s how to increase the return on your investment in developing a press release.  So here are twenty ways that you can use your release to communicate with your customers and prospects. It’s a mix of internal and external communication which will help to increase your publicity and marketing value.

1. Distribute your release to the appropriate news media.  Don’t forget to do that online and where needed offline as well.

2. Publish the release on your business website. It sounds so simple, but you don’t want to know how many times people tend to ‘forget that.’

3. Send a copy of your release to your prospects. There is nothing more important than letting your customers know what you are doing. Especially when it is about a new product.

4. Distribute the release to your employees. This is the first thing to do after finishing your release.

5. Use Twitter to promote a link back to the release on your web site. You are using twitter right? And you have some ‘like’ or ‘tweet’ possibilities at your website right?

6. Email the release to your email list. You do have an email list right?

7. Include the release in your press kits. Keep your press kits always up to date, if you don’t do that, how can others be up to date?

8. ‘Like’ the press releases at website. Take a GoogleAlert to check out where the release has been published. Facebook ‘like’ al the publications so it’s possible for your fans to see how your publicity is doing.

9. Use company bulletin boards to display the release.  This is the first thing besides point 4 to do after finishing your release.

10. Use your company blog to publish the release.  It’s good for your google rating and a great way to get started with the rest of the media.

11. Use online press release services to expand your news reach.  There are ways to publish your press release for free on multiple websites.

12. Include your release – or perhaps a summary – in your product information mailings.  Journalists love to keep things short and simple.

13. Buy ad space to publish your press release. It’s the way to make sure the whole story gets covered.

14. Include your release in shareholder kits. Very important for your internal communication to keep these people up to date.

15. Hand out copies of your press release at fairs, conferences, and other events.  It shows how active and busy you are with your product and how seriously you are working on it.

16. Distribute the release at press conferences.  When you give a press conference, don’t let anyone leave without handing over all the information you have confirmed during the conference itself.

17. Post your press release on your company Facebook page. After your blogpost, it’s  the first thing to do. And share it with the friends who will love that information.

18. Insert your press release into customer statements and invoices.  Make it clear what will be the positive effect for customers because of this new fact and how they can get it.

19. Add a link to your press release in your employee email signatures. And keep emailing it for at least a week.

20. Add your press release with appropriate tags to Delicious, Digg, and other social bookmarking and content sharing web sites.  There are even websites for this that can make it even more beautiful. Contact me for more information!

Last week, I organized a brunch for Kvik. Kvik is one of the largest and fastest growing businesses in kitchens and bathrooms in Scandinavia and Britain. The goal was to ensure greater name recognition towards the media, and to show what Kvik really has to offer.

I had a lot of fun organizing it. The wonderful catering Eef & Lien was very nice and very convincing. I knew they were good, but the crates and suitcases they had taken contained three times more food than I thought. We had reserved two tables for it, but it fit on three with difficulty. Another example of exceeding expectations.

I already knew the importance of post-calling people, but at every event, and I’m referring to every birthday, every graduation, every PR action – you find out who your friends are. I pick out the no-show ‘confirmed visitor’ easier every time.

The funnest part is of course the meeting of old friends, the people you work with regularly, and new people. And the best feeling is the afterglow of your hard work!

For the last year I have been working towards my diploma for the Studium Excellentie project from the HvA. I have followed two study blocks on Real Life Reasearch & Consultancy. This was commissioned by the City of Amsterdam. And then Creative Writing bij Nico Keuning. Last week was the day – I received my diploma.

The program I followed is called Studium Excellence. Studium Excellence is extracurricular, that means it all comes on top of the regular program. All participating students werenalso following other courses at the HvA. 
The program content is built around key trends in the media world. Students undertake multidisciplinary project and there are guest lectures by prominent speakers. Each reading instruction includes a college of 100 minutes. Students prepare for the guest lectures in workgroups. Literature is studied, discussed and students must write an essay and create a product. Besides this there is a individual study.The review was based on my portfolio. It was successful, and now, on to the next step!

Thursday , June 9th 2011, will be the start of hosting a number of workshops along with two other successful entrepreneurs. During these workshops we will offer insights into Free Publicity & Social Media, Online Marketing and Mobile Marketing. The presentations will be held in 3 half hour sessions. In conclusion there will be brainstorm sessions where you can discuss possibilities for your own situation with one of the speakers.

I will presently be organizing a seminar together with Esther Boxman of MergingIT (www.mergingIT.com) on Mobile Marketing: Apps and More (MergingIT) and Approaching PR Through Social Media (JenJenPR by Jennifer Delano).

We will both be explaining the benefits of Mobile Marketing and Social Media PR from the point of view of our workfields in half an hour per person. There will be individual brainstorming sessions afterwards to work out how to implement this in your own company.
